NorthTec allocated 60 places on Guarantee Scheme
Media release: NorthTec allocated 60 places on Government’s Youth Guarantee scheme for 2010
NorthTec has been allocated 60 places on the Government-funded Youth Guarantee scheme for 2010.
Education Minister Anne Tolley made the announcement of how the 2000 places on the 2010 scheme were to be allocated earlier today. (subs 23 September).
The Northland region achieved a total of 80 placement allocations.
Students on Youth Guarantee programmes can study on approved vocational courses free of charge.
“Essential foundation skills such as language, literacy and numeracy will be embedded in the programmes that NorthTec delivers,” said Dr Mark Ewen, Special Projects Manager (Programme Delivery) for NorthTec.
A high level of pastoral support will also be provided to the students. “NorthTec has a strong commitment to supporting the 50 per cent of its students who identify as Maori or Pasifika. This commitment will be reflected in the pastoral care provided to students on the Youth Guarantee Scheme.”
Students will choose a specialist area of study from subjects that may include areas such as trades and technology, primary industries, hospitality, tourism and retail or business and computing.
Twenty-eight providers have been approved for the delivery of Youth Guarantee programmes next year, as part of the Government's $52.7 million funding over two years. 2000 places will also be available in 2011.
“The Youth Guarantee will give students who are more motivated in non-school settings an opportunity to re-engage with learning and gain skills for future employment,” said Education Minister Anne Tolley.
Youth Guarantee places were allocated to regions of high need, based on the number of unemployed young people in the population and the quality of individual proposals.
NorthTec’s Chief Executive Terry Barnett welcomed the Minister’s announcement. “Well done to all who worked on this exciting proposal, which will create new opportunities for Northland Youth to train with NorthTec.”
