Statement on “Illegal New Zealand” Programme

The New Zealand Association of Private Education Providers notes the case reported on TV2, Thursday, 20 August, on the “Illegal New Zealand” Programme with concern.

NZAPEP is not privy to the identity of the provider, but takes a strong position against providers which engage in illegal activities of this nature. While it may be only a small handful of providers which engage in this type of activity, the whole sector is judged by their actions, and the reputation of one of New Zealand’s major export industries, i.e. quality provision of international education, is put at risk.

The registration of new providers and the ongoing maintenance of registration of existing providers is under the jurisdiction of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. NZQA has the legislative mandate to take action against institutions which act in this way.

NZAPEP urges NZQA to investigate this case fully and exercise the full extent of their authority. Unless this was one rogue employee acting without the knowledge of the senior management/ownership of the institution, an appropriate response is likely to include the bringing of criminal charges against the perpetrator and immediate withdrawal of heir registration as a PTE.

NZAPEP, which stands for quality education, is the largest association of private education providers in New Zealand and firmly backs any action taken to stamp out such activity which could affect the entire tertiary sector.
