Head start for young hairdresser
Hairdressing apprentice Zachary Davis has made a head start on his ambition to become an award winning hairdresser.
Zachary recently took fourth place in the Regional Fashion Hair Design Awards for 2009. Earlier this year he came third in the Daytime Style section of the Shapeshifter pre-apprenticeship competition in Wanganui.
UCOL Hairdressing lecturer Gillian Gosper says they are great results for an apprentice who graduated from UCOL just this year.
Zachary completed the Certificate in Hairdressing (Pre-apprentice) at UCOL in Palmerston North last year. He fast tracked his study by completing his first year units and some from the second year of his apprenticeship.
He did his work experience at Hair Transformers in Palmerston North where owner Elaine McKee (also Chair of UCOL’s hairdressing Advisory Committee) was impressed enough to offer him an apprenticeship at the salon.
Zachary says hairdressing is a really good way to use his creative side, in a practical, applied way. “I definitely prefer practical work, and I get to work with people, which I love.”
He says hairdressing can take you anywhere in the world, “and training with UCOL opens up some great opportunities.” He says he intends to continue to enter competitions – with the aim of winning.
Zachary’s fourth placing in the regional awards was in the SMG Urban Day Style section. 16 apprentices and 13 seniors entered and I came fourth among the apprentices. He’s shown above with his model, Amy Bothwell.
