Campus gets classy for Art Week

OUSA’s second annual Art Week kicks off today with free caricatures by portrait artist Jude Ansbacher and performances
by physical theatre and mask group Pop Tilly at varying locations around the University all week.
OUSA Events Manager Jen Stokes, who worked on the first Art Week last year, is looking forward to the week ahead. “It's
a really nice event for lots of different students to participate in: they can exhibit and sell their art pieces in the
Student Art Exhibition, they can take the installation tour, they can go to the theatre, or enter the Fashion show –
there is definitely something there for everyone.”
The 2009 OUSA Art Week also features “The Tour,” eight local artists’ work including painting, sculpture, photography,
film, and audio, spread across campus from the Hunter Centre to the Commerce building (see map p44). The Hocken Library
is also holding free tours on Tuesday and Friday of New Zealand art from their Pictorial Collections department. A talk
by Natalie Poland about the exhibition Charles Brasch: In the Company of Artists will also take place at the Hocken on Thursday at 1pm. Allen Hall continues to host the Lunchtime Theatre this week on
Thursday and Friday, and there will be a classical pianoforte concert at Marama Hall at 1pm on Wednesday. Market Day is
set to be artier than usual, and will feature live music from Rami Habib and Battle of the Bands third place winner
Thundercub.
This year, the OUSA Wearable Arts competition has evolved into a fashion show with three categories: casual wear,
evening wear, and wearable art. There is no set theme for the show and all three sections include both men’s and women’s
wear. The OUSA Fashion Show will be held in the Link at 6pm on Friday August 14, and is open to all University and
Polytech students. Prizes include $200 for the winner of each section, and $100 for the runner-up. Those entering will
need their own models, and entry forms need to be handed in to the OUSA Reception or emailed to jen.events@ousa.org.nz
by 4pm August 13.
