Pregnant mums flock to enrol in Growing Up
Growing Up in New Zealand reached a major milestone this week after enrolling the 5000th pregnant mother into what is New Zealand’s largest ever child research study.
It marks the half way point of the recruitment period, both in terms of numbers of mothers and the time allowed for enrolment.
Research director Dr Susan Morton is delighted with the response from parents.
“So many pregnant mums tell us that they enrolled in Growing Up because they see it as a positive way to improve their child’s life and the lives of other children in New Zealand.”
“They’re excited to be part of a study where their voices and their experiences are heard and can influence the way strategies are developed to improve the lives of all our children”, says Dr Morton.
Parents also comment that they really appreciate the positive emphasis of the study which investigates what makes children happy and healthy, rather than focussing only on negative outcomes and apportioning blame.
Growing Up in New Zealand is still recruiting pregnant mothers to be a part of this once in a generation study.
Having all eligible families enrolled ensures that the study represents all New Zealand’s newborn children, especially in terms of rural/urban mix, ethnic diversity and socio-economic status.
All pregnant mothers and their partners living in the study area, whose baby or babies are due before Christmas Day, are invited to take part in Growing Up.
The study area is bordered by the Auckland Harbour Bridge in the north and National Park in the south (excluding the Bay of Plenty).
To enrol, mothers can call Growing Up on 0508 476 946 or register online at www.growingup.co.nz
