Kudos For Three Postgraduate Students

Three of the six prestigious William Georgetti Scholarships for postgraduate study awarded for 2009 have gone to University of Auckland graduates.

The three Auckland recipients are Sunita Patel, BCom/LLB(Hons), Leron Postelnik, BE(Hons) and Avinash Sharma, MBChB.

The scholarships are given to encourage postgraduate study and research in a field which is important to the social, cultural and economic development of New Zealand. They were established from the residue of the estate of William Georgetti who wanted “the best brains available” to benefit.

Sunita Patel from Parnell was granted $45,000 for one year to study for an LLM at the New York University Faculty of Law. The focus of her study will be on public international law and the law of armed conflict in particular.

Leron Postelnik from Onehunga has gained $30,000 over three years towards a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at The University of Auckland. His field of study is dynamics and control, conducting research in applications related to robotics.

Avinash Sharma from Epsom has received $45,000 to work towards a Masters of Global Health Science at Oxford University. His year-long programme will focus on understanding current challenges in global health and building understanding of health policy and key areas of public health.

The awards, totalling $330,000 for 2009, are managed by Public Trust and administered by the NZ Vice-Chancellors’ Committee. The other three scholarships went to graduates from Waikato (two) and Victoria Universities.
