Students Urged to Apply Now for Second Semester

Media Release

26 June 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Students Urged to Apply Now for Second Semester Study Funding

If you are thinking about second semester study this year you need to sort out your finances now.

New and returning tertiary students are being urged to apply to StudyLink now for a Student Allowance or Student Loan for second semester study.

"Students need to apply now so that StudyLink can process their applications before they start their second semester study," says StudyLink's General Manager, Wendy Beban.

"The last thing we want is for students to be without money when they need it," Mrs Beban says.

The Student Allowance is a weekly payment to help with living costs during fulltime study. There are certain criteria you have to meet to qualify, but you won't have to pay it back.

Student Loans are available to cover compulsory fees, course-related costs, and/or living costs. As this money has to be paid back, Mrs Beban says it's important students borrow only what they need.

The easiest way to apply for a Student Allowance or Student Loan is online at www.studylink.govt.nz.

Once you've applied, you can set up a MyStudyLink online account, where you can view and update your details and apply for the Course Related Costs component of a Student Loan.
