Introducing 187 job-ready graduates

Whanganui UCOL’s Graduation Ceremony is being held today, to celebrate the achievements of students who completed their course of study last year.

The ceremony will be held at the Royal Wanganui Opera House at 1 pm. A total of 187 are eligible to graduate from Whanganui UCOL and 115 are expected to attend the Graduation Ceremony.

The graduands – graduates once they are capped – have completed qualifications in study areas including Business, Catering and Hospitality, Hairdressing, Mental Health, Sport and Fitness, Health Science and Technology, Nursing, Fashion and Fine Arts.

This year’s guest speaker is Chester Borrows, MP for the Whanganui Electorate.

UCOL Chief Executive Paul McElroy says he is looking forward to congratulating the graduands on their achievements. “Students work hard and make a great personal commitment to achieve their UCOL qualifications. In return they can be confident that their qualifications will be recognised and respected by their future employers,” he says.

“We take pride in the fact that our graduates are job-ready and able to hit the ground running, as employees. In a very real way, these new graduates are well placed to contribute to the economic, cultural and social growth of the Wanganui region – and of New Zealand”.

He says graduation is a time for students to celebrate what they have achieved – and to look forward to what they can do in the future. “It’s also a time for UCOL staff to celebrate and take pride in their own success in helping our students to reach their goals.”

Campus Principal Julia Pedley says it’s important to acknowledge the community groups and retailers who have embraced Whanganui UCOL, its staff and students during another successful year. “We welcome and value their support,” she says. “Wanganui people should all take pride in the success of our graduates: Whanganui UCOL is their polytechnic and we rely on the community’s support.”

After the ceremony, graduates, their families and members of the official Whanganui UCOL party will form a procession from the Royal Wanganui Opera House to the Atrium at the Matapihi ki te Ao campus in Rutland Street.
