Geoffrey Jelley, from the Christchurch suburb of Papanui, was appointed Prefect of the School at Shirley Boys High School last year. He also won a Ministry of Education Language Immersion Award to study in Japan for six months and represented his school at the Five School International meeting in 2007. He achieved excellence in NCEA Level 2 and with outstanding results in Mathematics and Chemistry.
Geoffrey has a deep interest in Asian cultures and intends to study engineering at NUS. He intends to also improve his proficiency in Japanese.
The Singapore Scholarships were set up in 1998 to strengthen New Zealand's relations with Asia, especially Singapore. Students enrol in business administration, science, computing or engineering faculties.
The students chosen must have strong academic records and the potential to be leaders in their chosen fields. Successful applicants will receive free tuition, accommodation, living expenses and one return airfare between New Zealand and Singapore each year.
NUS is a leading global university centred in Asia which offers a global approach to education and research, with a focus on Asian perspectives and expertise. It is well-known for its research strengths in engineering, life sciences and biomedicine, social sciences and natural sciences.
