Gowns on for Masterton’s Graduation gala

Gowns on for Masterton’s Graduation gala

UCOL Wairarapa students want a taste of tradition, judging by the numbers taking part in tomorrow’s grand UCOL Wairarapa graduation ceremony in Masterton.

Almost 100 students have opted to take part in the ceremony, rather than just receive their certificates, diplomas and degrees in the mail.

Campus Manager Angela Hewitt says that more than half of the 192 students eligible to graduate after completing UCOL Wairarapa qualifications will be in the Town Hall. “It’s well up on the number who took part in last year’s graduation – and that is great news. Graduation is right up there as a moment to remember forever. Our graduands can take great pride in what they’ve achieved – and face a brighter future with their new qualifications.”

The largest group graduating tomorrow are the 27 who’ve completed the Bachelor of Nursing, followed by the largest turnout ever of graduands from Youthtec, a government-funded programme for 16 and 17 year olds with an emphasis on computer skills.

Former New Zealand First MP Ron Marks is the guest speaker at the ceremony which starts at the Masterton Town Hall at 1.30 pm. Following the ceremony, graduates, their families and supporters, and UCOL Wairarapa staff will process up Bannister St and right into Queen St, through the middle of town to the Queen St entrance of UCOL Wairarapa.

Back at the campus, students, staff and guests will enjoy refreshments provided by well known UCOL caterer Mollie Davies in the newly renovated Student Hub.

Angela says it’s a time for the community to join in the celebrations “and also for us to say thank you for the community’s support. That includes the community scholarships available for our students – to be announced at tomorrow’s ceremony.”

Wairarapa community groups and organisations who donate scholarships include: REAP; Fletcher Challenge (administered by Masterton Trust Lands Trust (MTLT)); South Wairarapa District Council; Carterton District Council; Masterton District Council; Masterton Host Waipoua Lions Club; David Stone (Joan Stone Women’s Scholarship).

Angela says UCOL is proud to be a part of the Wairarapa community and to offer quality tertiary education in a supportive student environment. “We congratulate our graduands and wish them every success for the future,” she says.
