Southeast Asia: Regional Media Scholarships
Southeast Asia: Regional Media Scholarships
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in cooperation with the Asia New Zealand Foundation is offering two New Zealand journalists a five week-long media scholarship for the Southeast Asia region.
This scholarship, running for the second year after a successful inaugural year in 2008, is aimed at junior working journalists or recent graduate journalists. The key objective of the scholarship is to broaden awareness of security issues in Southeast Asia amongst New Zealand media, particularly regarding sensitive reporting issues such as conflict and terrorism. The scholarship programme provides for two awards this year to the region, beginning in May.
The scholarship will consist of a probably four-week work placement at an English language media outlet in one of Singapore, Jakarta, Manila or possibly Bangkok. The work placements will be supplemented by a programme of other activities, which may include a field trip, attendance at a relevant regional event, or meetings with key figures.
Applications are
welcome from junior working journalists or recent journalism
graduates with a demonstrated interest in security issues,
supported by a reference, and one or two examples of
relevant work.
For junior working journalists, the
reference should preferably be from their employer and
confirm the employer’s willingness to release the
applicant from their regular work for five weeks.
The deadline for applications is April 3. For more information, contact Asia New Zealand Foundation media adviser Charles Mabbett at cmabbett@asianz.org.nz.
