Whanganui UCOL Staff Celebrate with Start of Year Exhibition

Whanganui UCOL Fine Arts, Design and Fashion staff have started the year with an exhibition of their work at the Federal Hotel gallery.

Exhibition organiser, award winning artist and senior lecturer Andrea du Chatenier, describes the show as a “celebration for the beginning of the year.”

“It’s the first time we’ve had a staff show on our new campus and the first time we’ve included fashion,” Andrea says. “We have the tradition of starting the year with a show and now we have a beautiful new gallery.”

The exhibition is a chance for members of the public as well as students to see what the staff have been working on in their studios, reflecting the artistic experience and achievement that they pass on to their students..

The artwork, now on display at the Federal Hotel on Taupo Quay includes paintings, sculptures, glass, photography and fashion designs from no fewer than 20 members of the staff of Whanganui UCOL.

“Because we’re in a new building now we’re interacting with other members of staff,” Andrea says. “The exhibition is a chance for us to talk, discuss and feel that we are part of something creative.”

Andrea hopes that in the future they will also be able to include work from Palmerston North academic staff.

The exhibition can be viewed from 25 February to 6 March between Wednesday and Friday, 11am – 2pm at the Federal Hotel, Cnr Taupo Quay and Market Place.
