Glass Student Awarded Prestigious Prize
Whanganui UCOL Bachelor of Fine Arts glass student Kelly Ward will have her work recognised with the prestigious Doyle
Glass Prize, this Wednesday 10 December.
The $1000 prize comes as Kelly finishes her third year of the four year Bachelor of Fine Arts with the Whanganui UCOL
Quay School of the Arts, in association with the Wanganui Glass School, supported by the Wanganui District Council.
The Doyle Glass Prize, an acquisitive prize, will be awarded by Matthew Doyle, the Principal of Wanganui’s Doyle & Associates.
Matthew has chosen to support glass students and education by offering this annual award, since 2005. In the last few
years he has become immersed in glass art, building an excellent collection for Doyle & Associates whilst supporting glass education in Wanganui.
Kelly’s sculpture is a play on two and three dimensional images, and was created by sandblasting different layers onto
different levels of the sculpture, so it looks like a holograph. She says that glass is a very interesting and
challenging medium to work in, and the sculpture is “a parody of René Magritte’s ‘This is not a pipe’ painting.”
Of the award she says that “It’s pretty cool. I will probably put the money toward my fees for next year.”
