Central Otago students honoured at prizegiving ceremony
Sixty six current students and recent graduates were recognised for their achievements at Otago Polytechnic’s annual
prizegiving ceremony on Friday 21 November at the Cromwell Presbyterian Church.
Of those, fifteen students were singled out for special awards and scholarships.
Graduating student Byron Henry from Auckland won the National Certificate in Horticulture (Level 4) Excellence Award for
best overall theory and practical achievement.
Principal Lecturer Alex Huffadine said that Bryon was an outstanding student.
“Byron has the knack of combining theoretical knowledge and practical application very successfully. This award
recognises his ability and will serve as a passport to career opportunities in horticulture and viticulture.”
Cromwell local Michelle Webb, a part-time working student of the National Certificate in Horticulture (Viticulture)
(Level 4) was awarded a $2,000 Rotary Scholarship to assist with her study.
Mr Huffadine believes Michelle has huge potential.
“Michelle is a self motivated and extremely articulate person who shows great leadership skills. I expect we will see
her in a leadership role in the industry,” he says.
Otago Polytech Regional Manager Jean Tillyshort said the awards ceremony highlighted the wealth of talented young people
in Central Otago.
“These outstanding achievements are the result of hard work and commitment by both the students and their teachers who
have guided them. New Zealand’s future certainly looks bright with people of this calibre going out into the work
force.”
