New designers exhibit up-and-coming talents

A new wave of creative professionals will emerge from Palmerston North this year, in the first graduating class to
complete three years of the Bachelor of Applied Visual Imaging from UCOL.
The class of sixty students are showing off their talents at Te Manawa, in the BAVI 08 exhibition, starting this
Saturday 21 November.
The exhibition showcases the final projects of the third year students from the five disciplines of the degree:
animation, video, photography, graphic design and web design.
UCOL Graphic Design Lecturer Rachel Hoskins says the students’ work has blown her away. “This is the best talent we’ve
ever had. Our graduating students just get better and better. The work is so awesome; I’m extremely impressed and
proud.”
Head of the School of Photography, Arts and Design, Chris Hubbard says the student work on display incorporates a wide
range of conceptual and industry relevant products that demonstrate the conceptual, practical and theoretical abilities
of the final year students.
“It is an interesting exhibition not only because it shows the students’ creative potential, but because it demonstrates
their ability to deliver a professional and effective solution to the needs of the industry. Much of the work has
actually been produced for real clients and we are proud of the potential that we see in the students to make a
difference in the local, national and international economies.”
The UCOL BAVI is a unique multidisciplinary degree that specialises in the visual image and the practical and applied
nature of visual design in New Zealand.
Opening evening: Friday 21 November (by invite only).
The exhibition is open Saturday 22 November - 14 January at Te Manawa Science Centre. Entry is free.
