ABC Should Come Clean On Future Of NZ Operation
The education sector union NZEI Te Riu Roa is calling on ABC Learning to come clean about the future of its New Zealand operations.
The Australian-based child care operator is reportedly on the brink of collapse and about to be placed in receivership.
NZEI, which represents early childhood teachers, says ABC Learning has more than 150 childcare services throughout the country, yet the company is refusing to say what impact its financial difficulties could have on its New Zealand business.
NZEI National Secretary Paul Goulter says ABC employs up to 1,000 staff in New Zealand and has more than 7,000 children in its centres. “I find it unbelievable that the company is keeping staff and families in the dark about the future of its business. These people need and deserve some clarity and transparency,” he says.
The Australian government is closely monitoring developments and has hinted it may provide financial assistance to keep centres open.
NZEI has been seeking information from the New Zealand government over how it might help secure the future of staff and children in ABC centres in the event of closures.
