Ten BeST Awards for Whanganui School of Design Students

Whanganui School of Design students took a total of ten awards in the country’s top design awards.

The BeST Awards winners for 2008 were announced at a gala event held at the Aotea Centre in Auckland on Friday 10 October.

The 16 successful Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design students won three Silver awards and seven Bronze in the Graphic/Student and Student Interactive Media and Website Design categories, with individual and team works.

The three Silver award winners were third year students Barry Wylie, with an entry titled ‘Bro. Real men drink water’, Tan Wei Ming, with ‘ownly penang’ (shown above), and a collaborative group of students Michael Chu, Tom Lo and Ippei Takishima, with an entry titled ‘Impetus’.

The BeST Awards, run by the Designers Institute of New Zealand, recognise New Zealand's best graphic, product and spatial design and provide an industry benchmark for excellence. They also identify the best up and coming designers with student awards.

Betsy Berger, the new Academic Manager of UCOL’s Whanganui School of Design, says the school has a great track record in the BeST Awards and staff are very proud of all the students who succeed. “It is a great honour to be selected from all the New Zealand design programmes as a finalist in the BeST Awards, let alone to win. Our students have done exceptionally well.”

Betsy says award ceremonies of this magnitude are an important part of the Design student experience. “They provide an opportunity for students to have their work recognised by the best in the design industry.”
