Schools challenged to create a $3 baked potato treat

UCOL’s chef lecturers are challenging secondary school students to create a baked potato recipe that tastes great – and costs no more than $3 to make.

Chef Lecturer Nigel Sadler says the novel competition marks the United Nation’s International Year of the Potato – and also fits with need to be economical in the face of rising food prices. “Plus, we’ve chosen a food that most young people love and that lends itself to experimentation,” he says.

Nigel is a fan of the potato and says it represents good value for money. “It’s available all year round, is low in calories and high in vitamins and minerals, and is very versatile.”

The prize for the creator of the winning baked potato recipe is also novel: The winner will receive a set of chef’s knives and will be able to invite twenty of his or her friends to a free lunch at UCOL’s training restaurant Ambitions.”

“Of course the lunch menu will feature the winning potato recipe,” says Nigel.

The students who create the top six recipes will also receive a copy of Popular Potatoes by Alison and Simon Holst.

The competition is open to students at all secondary schools in the Manawatu. Entries must include the potato recipe, a breakdown of the cost of making the dish, and a coloured photograph of the completed dish.

Entires close on 11 November.
