Jewellery at Whitireia Picks Up the Pace Again

The Whitireia Jewellery programme has begun its annual calendar of events on the New Zealand jewellery scene with participation in three projects ranging from an exhibition in a Business and IT Faculty at Whitireia to contemporary art jewellery exhibition currently on show in Nelson and Te Papa’s exhibition on whales.

Two months into the year and the first year (level 5) contemporary jewellery design students in the Bachelor of Applied Arts are showcasing work in a series of illuminated wooden cases through the Whitireia Business and IT building.

The level 5 students have produced quirky and exciting rings that have been used to mount tableaus or miniature symbolic items.  The series of rings draw on ideas around ceremonies, femininity, consumerism and popular culture. Jess Winchcombe’s rings have cowboys and Indians mounted on them, like ‘finger-frames’ from an old western. Sophie Laurs’ rings are called heads and tails and present tiny wooden animal trophy heads, like those on the walls of a hunting lodge.

The exhibitors are: Jess Winchcombe, Sophie Laurs, Karen Dale, Gala van Ommen, Julia Middleton, Sam Kelly, Becky Bliss, Miku Ishigame and Mamta. The Exhibition can be viewed on The Porirua Campus, Business and IT Building, finishing on 18 April.
 
Jewllery tutors Peter Deckers and Owen Mapp are exhibiting in group shows, Deckers in LIKE: An Experiment in Interpretation an exhibition inspired by a Bill Manhire poem at the Suter Gallery in Nelson and Mapp has two wonderful bone carvings in Whales, Tohora at Te Papa in Wellington.

These exhibitions are the starting point in 2008. Immediately ahead in 2008, the Whitireia jewellery programme is presenting work inspired by the collections of the Museum of Wellington City and Sea in an exhibition is called ‘Re-Telling tales: contemporary translations in jewellery’ which opens 14 May 08.

Level 6 jewellery students are also organising an exhibition of jewellery for the National Showcase exhibition at the Michael Fowler Centre which opens on 6 June 2008.
