Auckland’s tertiary students begin year w discount

ARTA Media Release
27 February 2008

Auckland’s tertiary students begin year with a discount

As tertiary students get ready to return to campus they can now look forward to even cheaper bus and train fares.

Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) Chief Executive, Fergus Gammie says: “From 3 February, full-time tertiary students receive 40% off selected public transport fares. Because tertiary students are already setting an example to the rest of Auckland with their use of public transport we wanted to reward their travel behaviour and encourage them to continue leading the way using public transport as a habit.

“The Universities Travel Plan, released last September, showed that of the 40,000 students and staff who travel into Auckland's CBD each day of the semester, three quarters of students are already using a sustainable form of transport. If that same number of students chose to use cars to come into the city each day, the city would be impacted even further by congestion. The increased concession rate is part of ARTA's drive to improving value for money that passenger transport offers relative to the car. The new 40% discount for tertiary students is expected to result in an increase of up to 250,000 passenger trips in the year to February 2009.

“The 40% student discount is off a single adult cash fare and applies to 10-ride tickets and the 7-Day Northern Pass. For example, with the 40% discount tertiary students only pay $25.80 for a ten-ride stage 3 bus ticket. With the 20% discount tertiary students received until this month ten stage 3 bus rides would have cost $33.50; $7.70 more than they do now.”

To be eligible for the 40% discount, students must show a current student ID card from their tertiary institution with a MAXX student ID sticker, which will be issued to eligible students by registered tertiary institutions. This applies both when buying and using a ticket.

"Buying a discounted ticket will be even easier this year, as tertiary concession fares can now be purchased at more ticket agents – including transport hubs like Britomart, some malls and other retail outlets across Auckland. In the past, tertiary tickets were only available on campus,” Mr Gammie says.

For more information about the tertiary discount or about public transport services in the Auckland region please visit www.maxx.co.nz or phone 366 6400. AUT and University of Auckland students can also visit the MAXX Information Stand at AUT University Akoranga Campus on Friday 29 February, at AUT University Wellesley Campus between Monday 3 and Thursday 6 March, or at the University of Auckland in the week starting Monday 3 March.
