NZ students get Korean scholarships

Three outstanding New Zealand students have been awarded Asia New Zealand Foundation 2008 David Holborow Memorial Scholarships.

Min Uk (Michael) Kim of Tauranga and Ian Kim of Auckland will receive scholarships for outstanding secondary or tertiary New Zealand students of Korean descent.

A third student Eloise Nevin of Timaru is the recipient of the scholarship for descendents of NZ Korean War veterans.

The David Holborow Memorial Scholarships are each worth $3000 and are for undergraduate studies at New Zealand tertiary institutions. They were established in memory of the founder of the Asia New Zealand Foundation’s Korean Studies Programme.

The Holborow scholarship programme was established in 2000 and attracts a large number of entries annually. For this year’s scholarships, there were 75 applications.

The scholarship for descendents of NZ Korean War veterans was established in 2006 and is offered in partnership with the NZ Korean War Veterans Association.

Min Uk (Michael) Kim attended Tauranga Boys College last year and intends to study medicine at the University of Auckland. He achieved outstanding academic results at his college where he was named Proxime Accessit. He is also the 2007 winner of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry analytical chemistry competitions.

Ian Kim is currently in his fourth year at the University of Auckland where he is studying towards a biomedical engineering degree. He is a mentor in the Faculty of Engineering’s STEPS programme for new engineering students.

Eloise Nevin attended Timaru Girls’ High School last year and intends to study towards a conjoint Bachelor Degree of Law and Arts (LLB and BA) at Otago University this year. For her academic excellence, she was named Dux of her college.
