A record number of entries this year's Cut film competition for New Zealand secondary school students run by Wintec (Waikato Institute of Technology) resulted in some tough judging at the finalists' screening at Hamilton's Rialto yesterday.
Head of Wintec's School of Media Arts Margi Moore said entries came from across the country and the level of sophistication of the works surprised judges Gaylene Preston one of New Zealand's leading filmmakers, television, mixed media theatre director and documentary maker Lala Rolls, Paula Allen is Head of Media Studies at Hamilton's Hillcrest High School and Matt Chappell recent Wintec School of Media Arts Moving Image graduate and cinematographer for the winning 48 hour film 'Lease'.
"The standard higher this year than ever - and included some really hard hitting stuff . The standard of performance and editing has definitely risen to a very high level and technically the cinematography was most impressive," Ms Moore said.
"Notable this year was the very sophisticated understand and use of parody and humour. The work was extremely impressive overall.
Judges said the film 'Elliot' by CChristchurch Rudolf Steiner School director Isaac Strati and producer Jerome Reil deservedly won best drama : (awarded an apple i Mac computer plus Avid Media composer editing software for the school) as well as Best Director (awarded a scholarship to Wintec's School of Media Arts degree) saying it showed a very strong understanding of cinematic form and expressed the alienation of a boy who had run someone over with a car.
