PPTA welcomes new education minister
PPTA is welcoming the appointment of Chris Carter as education minister and is looking forward to working with Mr Carter to address key issues in secondary education.
PPTA president Robin Duff said that Mr Carter’s experience as a secondary teacher would give him a solid understanding of the demands on secondary schools and teachers.
He said Mr Carter’s challenges would be to continue to tackle operations funding pressures on schools as well as secondary teacher shortages in key subjects such as technology, maths and science.
There was also a need for more professional support for overworked secondary subject teachers in years 11-13 (NCEA Levels 1-3), for smaller class sizes to enable teachers to provide more academic guidance for each student and for more help for schools to deal with difficult student behaviour.
“We are looking forward to working positively with Mr Carter to resolving these issues and enhancing the overall quality of our public education system,” Mr Duff said.
