WELLINGTON SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM WINS
The Wellington team of 47 athletes (across 8 grades) has performed spectacularly in the Central New Zealand
Inter-Provincial cross country, for Primary and Intermediate Schools teams.
Our teams won 5 of the 8 team events and collected the “Phil Costley” shield for the over-all top team, (previously held
by Canterbury). The teams also won a lot of individual medals. In fact they “medalled” in 7 of the 8 events, with one
trifecta! Individual winners were; Kelsy Forman, Noah Billingsley, Holly White, Stevie Paine, Tim Robertson and Jemima
Holborow.
Silver medals were won by:
Liam Perry, Bridget Kiddle, Tim Jackson, Megan Robertson, Nic Lucie-Smith and Nicol Du Toit.
Third placings were achieved by:
Josie Kozyniak, and Suzannah Lynch
The event was held on a Department of Conservation reserve at Hanmer Springs. The course was a challenging one, with a
wide stream, a steep bank, and lots of open field.
Wellington fielded one team in each grade, while without the exigencies of travel, the host team, Canterbury was able to
field 3 or more. Other teams and athletes came from Nelson and Marlborough with individuals from Otago.
Next year’s event will be held in Wellington, and the date will be changed slightly to avoid the clash with the college
road races.
* Event Manager Paul Norton from Canterbury paid special tribute to Dominique Nunns. Running with an arm in plaster,
Dominique’s finishing burst enabled her to pip a Canterbury runner and secure the narrowest of wins for her team and
effectively secure the overall trophy for Wellington.
* The team shared the flight home with the Canterbury Rugby team and the boys were delighted to show them the shield
they had won off Canterbury. Canterbury players (particularly Scott Hamilton) were very good-humoured about it and spent
some time chatting to the team and autographing their boarding passes.
