Lincoln Scientist Awarded NZIM Scholarship
Lincoln scientist awarded NZIM Canterbury/Crop & Food Research Memorial Scholarship
Lincoln-based scientist, Dr Maureen O'Callaghan, who is a microbiologist with AgResearch, has been awarded the 2007 NZIM Canterbury/Crop & Food Research Memorial Scholarship.
This management training scholarship was initiated by NZIM Canterbury in memory of the seven Crop & Food Research staff tragically killed in an air accident in June 2003.
Announcing the award, CEO of NZIM Canterbury Reg Garters said a number of excellent applications were submitted from staff in a range of science organisations.
"New Zealand needs strong managers committed to bringing together science and business so the country can capitalise on the value created through innovation and strengths in science. We are really thrilled that we have been able to award this scholarship to further build these skills in New Zealand," he said.
Dr O'Callaghan works within AgResearch's Biocontrol, Biosecurity and Bioprocessing Group and provides research leadership for teams working on development of microbial products for control of key agricultural pests and assessment of non-target effects of new agri-technologies.
"As the recipient of the scholarship Dr O'Callaghan will attend the one-week NZIM Canterbury management development course, ESCO - The Discovery. This course provides career development for upper level managers and scientists," said Garters.
Accommodation is provided free of charge by the Copthorne Hotel Commodore Christchurch Airport as part of the package.
Staff of Crown Research Institutes, Universities and private research companies based in Canterbury, Westland and Nelson were eligible to apply for the scholarship.
