Manukau Institute of Technology first year hairdressing students showed off their creative flair at the recent Auckland 2007 Fashion Hair Design Awards, which is run by the Auckland Association of Registered Hairdressers and supported by hairdressing suppliers.

New Lynn resident Halanihake (Lani) Tongia won first place in the pre-apprenticeship section. Mangere residents Mai (Anna) Nguyen and Michelle Mitipelo and Papatoetoe residents Wasan Araboo and Shareen Edds all “produced wonderful work which was a credit to their training and artistry”, according to manager, School of Hair and Beauty, Margaret Jacobson.

The pre-apprenticeship competition is for students working towards Level 2 units. There were 35 competitors from various training providers as well as working in salons.

“The five MIT students were chosen from an inhouse competition. MIT first year hairdressing students have taken part in the competition previously but this is the best result for some years,” says Margaret.

“The competitors have a choice of doing either a set, or blow wave, or long hair style and have 20 minutes to complete their work. All of the MIT students chose to do a long hair style. The judges look for hair handling skills, creativity and the total look. Both judges were watching Lani closely throughout the whole process.

“There was great support from the whole of the year one hairdressing class. Nearly all of the students and tutors attended to support the competitors and they were all delighted with the win.”

All competitors received a certificate.
