Mike Pero Mortgage Scholarship Applications Popular

More than 500 young people have applied for next year’s Mike Pero Foundation Scholarship Programme which will provide three tertiary education scholarships worth $10,000, $5000 and $2500.

“We are delighted with the response, which has come from students all over New Zealand,” says Mike Pero Mortgages Chief Executive, Jeff Staniland.

The Mike Pero Mortgages Scholarship Programme, now in its second year, is for prospective first time tertiary students aged between 17 and 25. Applications are considered for any recognised course at a New Zealand tertiary institution.

“Our job is now to read through and assess all 552 applications, which we are doing this month. The three finalists will be announced in October."

“Last year’s three finalists are all outstanding young people, now studying and succeeding in their first year at university, but all were surprised and very pleased to have been awarded the scholarships."

“Their stories may have encouraged lots more young people to apply, and we are now looking forward to reading their applications,” says Jeff Staniland.

Christopher Blackford, from Bishop Viard College in Wellington, was awarded the $10,000 scholarship last year and is now studying for a BSc in Biotechnology at Victoria University.

Tamara Poi was at Mountainview High School in Timaru last year and was awarded a $2500 scholarship. She is now studying Political Science and Maori at the University of Canterbury. Devon Latoa was at Massey High School in west Auckland last year and was also awarded a $2500 scholarship. He is now studying Law and commerce at Otago University.

“The cost of quality tertiary education can be prohibitive for many prospective students and we feel that by offering the Mike Pero Foundation Scholarship Programme we can help provide options for students who show a real dedication to their studies,” concludes Jeff Staniland.
