Lincoln University Student Michael Lucas wins 2007 Jade Award
Jade Software Corporation announced today that LincolnUniversitystudent Michael Lucas has won this year’s Jade Prize.
First offered in 1999, the Jade Prize is awarded annually to the student with the highest final mark in the software engineering course.  The course is delivered by Stuart Charters, a new lecturer from the UKand is offered as part of the recently revised Software and Information Technology degree.  The prize has a value of $2,000.
Jade’s chief information officer, John Ascroft, who is responsible for the Jade Higher Education programme said; “We congratulate Michael on winning the Jade Prize. This prize is one way Jade Software Corporation can recognise achievement and also invest in our future by encouraging students to study ICT and have a career in our industry.”
This year’s winner is an undergraduate in his second year of study towards a Bachelor of Software and Information Technology.
LincolnUniversityis a specialised university offering interdisciplinary qualifications spanning areas such as physical and biological sciences, commerce, agriculture, and the environment.   It is one of New Zealand’s oldest tertiary education institutions and has a student roll of around 4000 and academic staff of approximately 600.
At the undergraduate level, the University’s Applied Computing Group teaches computing techniques and skills that students can apply to real world problems. It offers subjects in programming, systems analysis, databases, hardware, operating systems, networking, end user computing and simulation.
The Applied Computing Group has strong links with the local computing industry and is actively involved in research and postgraduate teaching leading to honours, masters and PhD degrees.
Mr Ascroft said, “Jade has hired more than 30 graduates over the past two years, five of whom completed their studies at LincolnUniversity. With some 250 employees in New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdomand the United States of America, the company is always looking to recruit students who have relevant ICT qualifications.”
