Freemasons to provide $220,000 in scholarships

Freemasons to provide $220,000 in university scholarships

Applications are now open for scholarships valued at $220,000 to students studying at Auckland, AUT, Waikato, Massey, Victoria, Canterbury, Lincoln and Otago universities.

The country’s largest, privately-funded scholarship programme - The Freemasons Charity - will award seven scholarships of $10,000 each, and 25 of $6,000 each to university students completing their graduate or post-graduate study in 2008.

A major revamp of the programme last year increased the value of the scholarships offered and altered the application criteria. Applicants must be students completing their degree, no matter their degree subject or faculty. The only other stipulation is that they must also take part in a non-academic community activity.

Mark Winger, president of the Freemasons Charity, says the increased monetary value of the scholarships has revitalized the 20-year-old scholarship programme and proved popular, with applications doubling at some universities. He emphasised that a Freemasons affiliation is not, and never has been, a requirement.

“Our scholarship recipients are high-achieving young people who recognise the importance and involvement of community service as well as academic success.

“There is no doubt that Freemasons scholarship recipients will become major contributors to society.

“We have worked with the universities to identify how best to assist with our scholarship programme and we are delighted with the results,”added Mark Winger.
