Wintec Students to Produce Book on Raglan
Raglan is the focus of a new book planned by Wintec (Waikato Institute of Technology).
To be called “Batches of Raglan” , the book will be produced by Wintec Media Arts students, lead by the institute’s
editor-in-residence, Venetia Sherson, a former Waikato Times editor.
Wintec Deputy Chair, Clint Baddeley, who also represents Raglan as a ward councillor on the Waikato District Council,
said the project is expected to begin within the next few weeks and be published in early 2008.
Clint said the book would provide a snapshot of Raglan’s history but more importantly would capture a style of
architecture that was rapidly disappearing.
‘Batches of Raglan’ is the second book published by Wintec, the first being ‘Heritage Hamilton’, produced with the help
of chartiable trust and which was a sellout last year with more than 3000 copies sold. It was the first book on Hamilton
history published in around 30 years.
‘Batches of Raglan’will follow a similar format, with a minimum of 100 pages incouding colour photographs and heritaage
images.
The book is expected to retail for around $48 and will be available in Raglan shops and in book stores around New
Zealand.
A major function for the book is being considered at either Wainui Reserve or the beach near Raglan’s camping ground
with the Raglan community being invited.
“I’m very pleased that we are able to capture the contemporary history of Raglan at the same tiem as giving 20 Wintec
students an opportunity to work on a real life project,”Clint said.
He said the book would be gifted by Wintect to public and school libraries throughout the Waikato.
