Open Polytechnic students win accounting prizes

Four Open Polytechnic of New Zealand students studying towards accounting qualifications received awards from The New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants to coincide with the Polytechnic’s graduation ceremonies recently.

The students each received a cash prize of between $150 - $350 and a one-year subscription to the Chartered Accountants Journal.

The prizes were in recognition for being named the top year one, two, and final year accounting students in the Polytechnic’s Bachelor of Business degree, with a fourth prize awarded to the top accounting graduate in the New Zealand Diploma in Business.

For Jana Marusakova of Waiheke Island, being named The Open Polytechnic’s top final year accounting student was the icing on the cake of a busy year. She fitted her studies around three part-time jobs and a trip to Europe

“I was really surprised when I found out I had won,” says Jana. “I have received the award before as a second year student, and I didn’t expect to win again because I had a really busy semester.”

New Plymouth’s Trent Senior took away the prize for being named The Open Polytechnic’s top accounting graduate in the New Zealand Diploma in Business, and says the prize was a nice acknowledgment of his study achievements.

The top year one and two accounting prizes went to students in Auckland and Gisborne. All four students are studying by distance with The Open Polytechnic while they gain their professional qualifications.

The Open Polytechnic enrolled nearly 32,000 students last year, and is New Zealand's specialist provider of open and distance learning, offering a wide range of courses and programmes on a national basis.
