MIT Tongan graduand rises to the technology challenge
Leotisia Vea began at Manukau Institute of Technology as a diploma student, but liked the facilities so much he decided to stay. And after more than three years full time study he is graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering Technology and is ready to put down roots in the real estate industry.
“I really enjoy challenges and that’s vital for computer network engineering because it’s all about problem solving,” says the Mangere resident.
“The course really builds up your critical thinking skills and I’ve ended up with a lot of expertise. It’s given me an in-depth understanding of technology so I know I’m going to be able to keep up with future technological developments. I have a lot of employment choices now.”
The degree programme includes core subjects such as electrical and electronic principles, computer hardware and software, mathematics, engineering design, communications, accounting and management, turning out well-rounded graduates able to function successfully in a variety of roles and industries.
“The networking laboratory is excellent,” says Leo, “and the lecturers were so friendly and open. They were even prepared to help us with our questions after-hours.”
Leo was born in Tonga and arrived in New Zealand in 1991 to join his extended family. Now 40 years of age, he has spoken so enthusiastically about MIT within both his family and his church group that several members have been encouraged to enrol.
“I talk to the parents and try to influence them and I try to motivate the younger ones. I would like to see the rest of my family at MIT.”
Leotisia will graduate at MIT’s formal Graduate Ceremony on Tuesday, 29 May at the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre.
