Investment in Education
“Tomorrow’s budget has already promised tertiary education some welcome funding increases. However, for Polytechnics, it is barely enough to keep breathing let alone to fund necessary capital developments and quality improvements. While government recognise the need for investment in education, they need to step up with more.” said Richard Mitchell, OPSA president.
Student-debt Problem
“Students remain the only class of people forced to borrow simply to eat. Like the last decade of budgets, students will again be watching the budget with a hopeful anticipation of universal student allowances.” said Mr Mitchell
“All full-time students should be entitled to a living allowance equivalent to the dole - just like they were a little over a decade ago. Students are simply asking for a living benefit while they study, it’s hardly asking for the moon. It’s a basic human right you would have thought, but not in New Zealand.” said Mr Mitchell
