Prestigious Scholarship A Taonga

Prestigious Scholarship A Taonga From Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu

The presentation of the Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu Nursing Scholarship in memory of Dame Te Atairangikaahu will take place on Saturday April 14 at te Kauhanganui, Hopu Hopu in the Waikato.

Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec) launched the Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu Nursing Scholarship in loving memory of Dame Te Atairangikaahu. The taonga from the late Dame Te Ata, was first announced in March last year when Wintec bestowed its highest honour, a Fellowship, on Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu at Turangawaewae Marae.

The scholarship will enable a Tainui student to undertake a three-year nursing degree with fees being paid by Wintec for the three years. In each of the years following, a new scholarship will be offered.

The launch of the scholarship was postponed during the ill health and death of Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu. Consultation with and approval by family members meant that the $5,000 per year scholarship could be offered for the first time now for entry this year.

The three year scholarship allows the recipient to undertake full time study in Bachelor of Nursing (Direct Entry), Bachelor of Nursing (Registered Nursing), Bachelor of Midwifery, Postgraduate of Diploma in Nursing or a Post-Graduate Diploma in Nursing (Māori Mental Health).

The recipient is Te Inuwai Kapea , Ngati Hauā. Te Unuwai is considered an ideal recipient for this scholarship. She has worked as a health worker for Te Hauora o Ngati Haua and has gone back to formal study after raising her children.
