Wintec Receives Additional Funding

The Chief Executive of Wintec, Mark Flowers, announced today that the Tertiary Education Commission had approved $11.4m from the Tertiary Education Commission’s Quality Realignment Programme. This comes in addition to an earlier approval of $4.1m, bringing a total of $15.5m over three years.

This payment is to support Wintec’s modernisation programme, which includes technology developments, building improvements and developing stronger links with neighbouring institutes of technology and polytechnics.

Tertiary Education Commission chief executive, Janice Shiner, said the funding would enable Wintec to move forward in the new tertiary education environment.

“We are in the process of introducing significant changes to the way we invest in tertiary education so that we can improve the overall quality and relevance and help drive the country’s economic and social priorities.

“That requires a strong network of provision so I am especially pleased that an important aspect of Wintec’s plan is to develop stronger links with other institutions,” Ms Shiner said.

The Chairman of the Wintec Council, Gordon Chesterman, is delighted with the decision. We are very much in support with the way that government is dealing with the issues for the tertiary education sector. We see Wintec as being at the forefront of the change to meet the demands of the economy, employers in our region, and the government. It is great that we have now received this support, and I am sure this news will be well received in Hamilton and the wider region. We now feel much more able to get on with the changes we have planned for.
