The Salvation Army Allocates $153,000 For Rural Youth Scholarships In 2007

The Salvation Army through the Edmund Sanderson Jeff Farm Scholarship Scheme has approved 56 scholarships valued at $153,000 to young people from around New Zealand to study at Lincoln University and Telford Rural Polytechnic.

The scholarships include studies relating to general agriculture, agricultural science and commerce, dairy practice, farm management and forestry. Other courses considered were apiculture (beekeeping) and equine knowledge.

The Salvation Army own and manage (through a Farm Board) a substantial holding of 1932 hectares (4800 acres) in the Kaiwera District near Gore, running in excess of 20,000 su, comprising Romney sheep, predominantly Hereford cattle, and an increasing deer herd.

This property was bequeathed to The Salvation Army many years ago by the late Mr Jeff with some conditions, the principal clause being that “the farm and farm profits be used for the training of underprivileged youths in farming”.

The objectives and the purpose of the scholarships are to encourage young people who otherwise would not have the opportunity to fulfil their desired goal. The Salvation Army awards these scholarships as a significant investment in young people in New Zealand and rural industry.
