New Zealand schools win more than $665,000 worth of technology

Students all around New Zealand will soon be logging on to shiny new Apple iBook computers and experiencing Canon printers and cameras, following the conclusion of the 2006 Westfield Shop For Your School campaign.

More than 350 schools and some 109,000 students participated in the Shop For Your School campaign. This year the programme was restructured to include two categories – schools with up to 300 students (Band 1) and those with 301 or more (Band 2).

Friends and family of primary and intermediate students have been donating their shopping receipts to their chosen school in the nine-week Shop For Your School campaign.

The programme concluded on Sunday, September 17 and the prizes were announced last week at various Westfield malls around the country.

“For four years now we have been involved in the Shop for Your Schools programme and it never ceases to amaze me how much local communities get behind their schools,” says Westfield national marketing and communications manager Linda Trainer.

“Kiwis are extremely community minded and this has obviously been a big incentive for relatives, friends and associates to get out there and shop for their local schools.

“The prizes are plainly a big draw for many as most of us appreciate the huge benefits modern technology provide in the classroom,” Linda says.

More than $665,000 worth of technology and prizes have been provided for the Westfield Shop For Your School campaign at nine participating Westfield centres across New Zealand. They include Apple computers, software and Canon digital and video cameras.

27 iPod Nanos and nine 30Gig iPods were also handed out to shoppers just for registering points for their favourite schools.

Still to be announced is the lucky school which will host the TV3 show Sticky TV. Students get the chance to meet Sticky TV stars, Sam, Julia and Drew when they film an episode at the chosen school in October 2006.

Over the years, simply by doing their everyday shopping at a Westfield centre, Kiwis will have helped hundreds of thousands of primary and intermediate students gain access to more than $2.2 million of educational resources.
