Education appointment applauded
The appointment of Karen Sewell to the position of chief executive of the Ministry of Education is good news for New Zealand education, PPTA president Debbie Te Whaiti said today.
Debbie Te Whaiti said Karen Sewell had high credibility among the teaching profession and the PPTA welcomed her appointment.
“We’re very pleased that the job has gone to someone with such extensive current experience within the New Zealand system. Karen has experience in a whole range of positions in a number of schools as both a head of department and as principal. In addition she has done an excellent job as head of the Education Review Office and as acting chief executive of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.
“Given the depth of her education sector experience she is in an excellent position to build on the good work of her predecessor Howard Fancy and the positive relationships he established.”
Karen Sewell was an active member of PPTA during her time as a teacher and headed the Secondary Principals Council for a time.
