High School Hook Up Competition discovers hidden talent in New Zealand Secondary Schools
New Zealand Secondary Schools are full of hidden musical talent if the response to Boost Mobile’s recently launched High
School Hook Up competition is anything to go by. Over 70 registrations have been received since the competition went
live on 11th June.
High School Hook Up gives secondary school students the chance to show off their musical skills by creating a new track
of their interpretation of what it means to “hook up” in Aotearoa.
According to Kog Studio’s Chris Chetland the standard of entries received so far is very high.
“There is some exceptional talent out there both in terms of song writing and musicianship. The diversity of genres is
fantastic as well. There’s everything from Hard Rock to Hip Hop to Alt Country!”
The winners of High School Hook Up will be flown to Auckland where they will be holed up at Kog Studios with award
winning production team Handmade Music (Chris Chetland, Chong Nee and Dave Baxter) to record their ‘hook up’ track.
As well as having their winning track professionally produced, the winners will receive mentoring in mixing and
recording, tuition in Logic music production software and pressing of 500 CD’s with album art design by Saatchi and
Saatchi.
There’s still time for secondary school students to enter High School Hook Up as entries don’t close until 29th July.

The site also offers advice from a number of Top NZ musicians. Brendon Reihana from Blindspott, Dane Rumble of Fast Crew
and Joel from Goodnight Nurse are just a few that are giving their suggestions on how to create a winning track.
Budding musicians can also look for inspiration from Goodnight Nurse who have just released their version of ‘hooking up
in Aoteaora’ with the hot new single “Can’t Wait” and Boost Mobile NZ Schools Tour act Falter with their track, “Hook
Up”.
