Otago Polytechnic Students' Association today welcomed changes to the Tertiary Funding model announced by Tertiary Education Minister, the Hon. Dr. Michael Cullen.
"I am positive the new direction will benefit both students and the wider community through higher quality courses and better meeting the needs of the community", OPSA Co-president Mr. Mitchell, said.
Students and staff have been calling for a better funding model that better meets the needs of students and the community for years.
"The current bums-on-seats EFTS based funding system has been failing both students and the community by pressuring Institutions to focus on the bulk number of enrolments rather than the quality or community's need of courses." Mr. Mitchell, said.
"After all the promises that the Labour Government has made to students, Dr. Cullen is finally using the education he got for free and has come up with something clever," quipped OPSA Co-president Natalie Absalom.
OPSA hopes that the new model will allow the survival of courses that are needed by the community, but may not be constantly popular with students.
