New Zealand’s Karen Williams has been selected for a prestigious Scottish international scholarship.
Ms Williams will join 22 scholars from 6 countries to undertake post-graduate study in Scotland under the new Scottish International Scholarship Programme.
Paula Middleton, director of British Council New Zealand, welcomed the initiative: “British Council New Zealand’s role is to connect aspirational New Zealanders with opportunities in the UK. This scholarship gives an outstanding graduate the chance to gain a higher qualification, while engaging with contemporary UK culture and ideas.”
Ms Williams will study for a Master of Science in Information Technology at the University of Glasgow. Of Samoan and Scottish descent, she is looking forward to learning more about her Scottish ancestry, as well as the professional development opportunities this scholarship provides.
“Technology is always changing and at Glasgow I will be exposed to world class lecturers, world renowned current research and ambitious like-minded students”, says Ms Williams.
Ms Middleton says “Karen stood out for her entrepreneurship and ambition. She will be a fantastic ambassador for New Zealand in the UK”.
The Scottish International Scholarship Programme is targeted at graduates in science, technology and the creative industries, and aims to create lasting connections between Scotland and industry leaders and entrepreneurs across the world. It is supported by the Scottish Executive’s Fresh Talent initiative which aims to encourage bright, talented and hard-working individuals to live, work and study in Scotland. The First Minister for Scotland, Jack McConnell, will host a reception for students being supported by the Scholarship Programme in Edinburgh later this year.
British Council administers the
scholarships on behalf of the Scottish Executive and is
