Countdown To Children’s Day
Children’s Day is just two sleeps away and over a thousand events are expected throughout the country to celebrate our nation’s children on Sunday 31 October.
“The build-up to Children’s Day has been fantastic. Thousands of hands are busy putting the finishing touches on events and children are looking forward to their own special day,” says Children’s Day project manager Brigit Vaughan.
“There is a huge variety in the types of celebrations happening on Children’s Day, including fun days, teddy bear’s picnics, festivals, galas, family reunions, storytelling sessions, art exhibitions, neighbourhood parties, and even elderly people reminiscing about their childhood. Visit the website — www.childrensday.org.nz — for more information about what is happening in your community.” The Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright says: “I congratulate the organisers of Children's Day for getting our communities involved in this day and I encourage all people to take part in Children's Day activities this year.”
The Children’s Commissioner Dr Cindy Kiro says: “Let’s take the opportunity on Children’s Day to remind ourselves to treat all children the way we would like to be treated ourselves.”
Children’s Day was established in New Zealand in 2000 by a group of supporters from government and non-government organisations. Their goal is for family/whänau and community ownership of Children’s Day in all communities throughout New Zealand.
