Korean Cultural Celebrations at Auckland Museum
26 August 2004
A day of Korean Cultural Celebrations at Auckland Museum
Visitors to Auckland Museum on Saturday 18 September will have the opportunity to experience the colourful diversity and rich culture of Korea with a special Living Treasures Day of activities and events. With live performances, pottery demonstrations, Korean fashion, film screenings and children’s craft activities, the day promises to both entertain and educate Aucklanders on all that Korea and its peoples have to offer.
Witness dance and musical performances from the traditional to the contemporary with an exciting lineup of talented performers. Maddang Hannuri, a local Samulnori percussion group, will give a rousing performance of traditional Korean music. For a more contemporary Korean flavour, jazz singer Eunhye Ji will delight visitors with Korean popular music. Traditional Korean dance takes centrestage as Kyungeun Koo performs both solo and alongside her dance students. Later in the day enjoy a Korean-New Zealand fusion hip-hop performance.
Taekwondo (“the way of the foot and the fist”) is the national sport of Korea, as well as one of the world’s most commonly practiced sports. Demonstrations of this popular sport will be given by the President of the Korean Judo Association, Dr. Heejong Yang.
Gain an understanding of traditional Korean pottery techniques with Korean ceramic artists Sang-sool Shim and Keum-sun Lee as they demonstrate their techniques and designs in a special demonstration. Following the demonstration, Sang-sool Shim will lead a tour of the Museum’s Korean Ceramic Gallery.
Sample Korean fashion with designer, Angela Kim. Angela will be showing and discussing her original designs which draw on her Korean heritage and combine wearable arts, woven sculptures and traditional Korean textiles.
Listen to an illustrated talk by Associate Professor Hong-Key Yoon, as he discusses the unique identity of Korean culture.
There are plenty of Korean-flavoured activities for the kids in our Discovery Centres, with a special opportunity to take part in a Korean language workshop with Dr. Inshil Yoon from The University of Auckland, as well as art and craft activities and Korean cartoons.
