The Carter Observatory has become a registered education provider in order to teach astronomy to secondary school students on the Internet.

Board spokesperson Robert Shaw said the Carter obtained this registration from the New Zealand Qualfications Authority because the Carter now teaches astronomy courses into secondary schools.

The Carter is New Zealand's National Observatory and it is based in Wellington. It is established by Act of Parliament to advance astronomy education and research .

Mr Shaw said the intention is to strengthen science education throughout New Zealand by making specialist teachers of astronomy available to schools via the Internet.

"We can teach individual students or classes in schools and the students can obtain credits towards their NCEA."

The Carter wants to work in close partnership with schools and help to get students involved with science and technology.
