Students protest government injustice to unemployed
students
Student leaders from around New Zealand will be taking their anger about Labour's refusal to introduce an unemployment benefit for students who can't find work over summer to Parliament today.
A student cardboard city will be created at Parliament Grounds at 4 pm today to draw attention to the plight of the two thirds of tertiary students who are not entitled to an unemployment benefit if they can't find work over summer.
"Steve Maharey agreed
with students that this was a grossly unfair policy when he
was in opposition," said Fleur Fitzsimons, Co-President of
NZUSA. "We'll be taking the message directly to him that a
result of his inaction is student poverty - our food banks
are busier than ever."
