Professor Himangshu Paul, Professor of Operations Management

Professor Himangshu Paul is the new Professor of Operations Management at Auckland University of Technology. He returns to New Zealand after holding positions at various overseas universities.

Professor Paul was born in India and educated there initially. He has worked throughout Europe, USA, Asia and Australia, but calls New Zealand home, saying that he enjoys the people and culture here. “I’ve always planned to return to New Zealand eventually and hopefully I’m here to stay now.”

Born in India and educated there initially, Professor Paul obtained his Masters and Doctoral degrees from Asian Institute of Technology in 1972 and 1975 respectively. He began his academic career in New Zealand at Massey University in 1975 as a postdoctoral fellow in the Industrial Management and Engineering Department.

Professor Paul then taught at National University of Singapore, North Carolina State University, USA and University of Canterbury until 1996 when he moved back to his alma mater Asian Institute of Technology as Professor and Coordinator/Head of the Management of Technology Programme. He was then Dean of the School of Management at the Asian Institute of Technology from January 1999 to June 2003, prior to joining the Faculty of Business, AUT.

Professor Paul has published widely in international journals and conference proceedings in the areas of operations strategy, total quality management and technology management. He has also supervised a large number of doctoral and master students in these areas.

His current research is focused on the impact of technology and quality management systems in enhancing business performance, in manufacturing as well as service operations including telecommunication, electricity, and health.
