NZAPEP Conference Awards 2003

The New Zealand Association of Private Education Providers (NZAPEP), the largest national association of registered private training establishments, presented awards to the outstanding Student, outstanding Tutor and outstanding Private Training Establishment during the Annual Conference in Wellington last week.

The awards recognised outstanding achievement and celebrated the success of private tertiary education in New Zealand

Kevin Smith, immediate Past President of the Association, said the awards also celebrated the sectors’ success and commitment to quality and excellence in education. The 2003 NZAPEP Conference with the theme, Winning Combinations – Pathways to Excellence, provided the ideal opportunity to award the individuals and organisation for their achievements.

Awards were made to the following: Outstanding Student of the Year – Nancy Gavin from Northern Business College Outstanding Tutor of the Year - Graeme Couper of Northland Farm Labour Whangarei Outstanding PTE of the Year - People Potential Limited from Whangarei

NZAPEP is the largest national association of private training establishments registered with NZQA. Outstanding Student of the Year - Nancy Gavin:

Nancy is a Cook Island Maori who entered Northern Business College as a “second chance” learner. She was a sole mother of a 6 year old daughter who had recently moved to Auckland from Tokoroa. She passed her NCC Level 2, achieved consistently excellent work experience reports, and with NBC’s encouragement and her own drive and determination was the first student to enrol on AUT’s pathways scholarship in mid 2002. She passed her Certificate in Business at AUT in her first semester and was permitted to staircase to the NZ Diploma in Business immediately, without a second semester of study.

Nancy has a “can do” attitude, constantly striving for success and perfection. She progressed from Training Opportunities student, a solo mother with less than three School Certificate passes, in January 2002 to Diploma level student at university in January 2003. She has a sense of fun, excellent grooming, sets high goals and pursues them with the aim of making a better life for herself and her daughter.

Nancy is now AUT’s “model” TO scholarship student. She has spoken at conferences for AUT, and also spoke at NBC’s mid-year graduation – she is inspirational.

Outstanding Tutor of the Year – Graeme Couper

Graeme managed and tutored a complex (Level 4 & 5) course in four centres throughout Northland. He has performed exceptionally well and has been engaged by the Agriculture ITO as a Regional Moderator and has been involved in a major review of agriculture unit standards, including helping to write some units.

Extensive industry experience means that Graeme has a huge amount of credibility with students, who are generally farm managers or sharemilkers. His ability to tutor and facilitate discussion and learning with students of this level is outstanding and the feed back from students has been extremely positive.

Graeme’s ability to cover a huge range of students, from Level 1-5, and a wide range of topics including non unit standard based industry training contributes to his success as a tutor.

Outstanding PTE of the Year – People Potential, Whangarei

People Potential Limited excels in the provision of foundation education. It is particularly successful in working with people whose lives are in crisis and its particular brand of education rekindles hope in learners, raises their self belief and allows them achieve beyond what they thought was possible. As a company it is committed to continuous improvement. It has a strong internal audit and self review system and is on a three year audit cycle with NZQA.

During 2002 People Potential: exceeded contractual obligations with 100+% occupancy and highest achievement of labour market outcomes in Northland achieved a student roll of 75% Maori therefore significant contribution to Maori inclusiveness in tertiary education established a bi-lingual department – Te Kura Matauranga O Hatea providing opportunities for Maori management and leadership administered Te Kotahitanga fire safety project in collaboration with the New Zealand Fire Service in Northland, East Coast and Bay of Plenty had staff members recognised nationally - Tertiary Excellence Award, Knowledge Wave scholarship & participation, selection as senior judge in New Zealand Culinary Fare introduced added value qualifications at no cost to students – Workplace First Aid Certificate, Driver Licencing, Health and Safety, Liquor Licencing continued a strong professional development programme – in house training and all staff proceeding with Degree in Adult Teaching had successful applications for Rangatahi Maia and Innovative Literacy Funding pool achieved a 20% growth of business.
