Auckland International College Announces New Appointment

Auckland International College (AIC) has lured an experienced educator home to New Zealand to take up the newly created position of Principal of the Senior School and the School of Foundation Studies.

Carolyn Solomon, BA, Dip Ed, who returns after over nine years working at overseas schools, commenced her position on January 20, 2003.

“AIC offers pathways and access not only to New Zealand universities with its Foundation Studies programme, but also to the top universities in the world with its planned International Baccalaureate programme offered through the Senior School,” says Carolyn.

“In an era of a global economy, it is important for New Zealanders to have a college that provides access to the Asian Pacific region, and for young people to get to know their neighbours by learning and living alongside each other.”

AIC is much more than just an English language school for Asian students - it is also a fully NZQA certified Senior School open to motivated year 11-13 students seeking a challenge, and who wish to pursue an alternative curriculum to that which is offered in the local state school system.

“Our pre IB programme, starting July 2003, followed by the IB Diploma planned for implementation in July 2004, is attracting interest from parents and students looking for a rigorous pre-university programme in an international context. AIC is offering suitable students scholarships worth up to $43,000 each,” says Carolyn.

As a New Zealand educator Carolyn has held a number of leadership roles in education at regional and national levels. In 1993 she moved to Singapore after 7 years as Principal of Tauranga Girls' College, New Zealand.

As deputy head of the United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA), Singapore, she was responsible for the UWCSEA senior school International Baccalaureate (IB) program.

Most recently Carolyn was Foundation Head of an International Baccalaureate world boarding school in Thailand. “Her experience is an asset in terms of inspiring parent confidence!” says Josh.

AIC is the first of 30 planned colleges in an exciting global development in international education which will give AIC students valuable links with senior students in other countries as part of a wider global network of schools.
