The Post Primary Teachers’ Association stands by its position to take a proposed collective agreement settlement package
to its members.
PPTA senior vice president Graeme Macann said today the democratic process would be followed as it has been in every
collective agreement settled by the Association.
“That process is that we take this proposed collective agreement to our members to vote on. They will decide whether to
accept this agreement or not. Some members may not like it and they are well within their rights to reject the deal.
Some will however like it and decide to accept it. That’s democracy and the PPTA executive will be guided by that.”
Mr Macann said while he acknowledged the anger and disappointment of some members, he did not condone wildcat action. He
asked that members reserve their judgment on the package until they have had the chance to discuss it fully in
ratification meetings over the next few weeks.
“We have a responsibility to take this package to our members. They will be provided with enough information to enable
them to make an informed decision,” he said.
“Members have already rejected one offer, the second offer in March was rejected by PPTA executive. This is the third
offer and it needs to be carefully considered by our members,” Mr Macann said.
Mr Macann urged the public to keep supporting secondary teachers.
“We have had tremendous public support on our issues. We know this wildcat action is disruptive and we understand the
position it puts parents in. We would however ask that the public keep supporting secondary teachers and the incredible
work they do in schools.”
