Shell Supports Solar Car Challenge –
Launches Solar Kit For Schools
Shell New Zealand today farewelled the Hutt Valley High School Solar Car Challenge team as it heads to Australia to take on the world’s best, powered by Shell manufactured solar panels.
Shell Chairman Ed Johnson joined Education Minister Trevor Mallard to farewell the students, and said that Shell was proud to sponsor the team.
“These students have done an amazing job, from scratch, in getting their car to the Solar Challenge Race in Australia. They are an incredible bunch of students and Shell is very proud to have been able to help, by supplying the 12 Shell Solar Panels that will power their car across Australia.
“Shell internationally is committed to exploring new, renewable sources of energy and solar energy is part of the quest. Shell already manufactures solar panels on a commercial basis, and production can hardly keep up with demand,” Mr Johnson said.
Shell used today’s farewell for the school students to launch the Shell Solar Kit, aimed at assisting students to better understand solar energy within the science curriculum.
“Shell is also proud to officially launch the Shell Solar Kit today. Along with our sponsorship of the Hutt Valley High School’s Solar Car Challenge, this educational aid is yet another practical example of how Shell is committed to educating future generations of New Zealanders about potential renewable energy sources.
“Shell has worked closely with a local joint venture partner, Tri-Tek Holdings, to bring a low cost, high impact and practical resource to teachers and students, to make learning about solar energy both fun and challenging.
“Shell is committed to continuing the search for renewable sources of energy and seeing these being applied in the years ahead in an economically and socially acceptable way.
“Shell runs a business that focuses not just on profit, but on people and on the planet as well. Shell’s commitment to sustainable development is a demonstration of that – as is our sponsorship of this Solar Car Challenge team and the Shell Solar Kit,” Mr Johnson said.
